Thru hiking the Appalachian Trail is an incredible experience that only a few get to experience. Every year, thousands of hikers make their way to Georgia or Maine to begin their adventure, but only a handful of hikers will complete this incredible challenge. For everyone else, you can still enjoy the Appalachian Trail as a section hike and slowly but surely fill in the gaps until you complete the 2,190 miles from point to point.
Amicalola Falls State Park is where the approach trail is located which leads to Springer Mountain that is the southern terminus of the Appalachian Trail. In this video, we hike from the beginning of the southern terminus to Springer Mountain. The approach trail can be challenging as it is a steady incline all the way to Springer Mountain.
This is the first section of the Appalachian Trail in Georgia starts at Springer Mountain and crosses into Three Forks. This is a very beautiful section and most hikers tend to stay at Stover Creek Shelter. The next section from Three forks into Gooch Gap is very challenging so rest up!
Three Forks to Gooch Gap Shelter is an extremely challenging area to hike with some intense inclines and descents on the Appalachian Trail. In this video, you will see first hand on some of the challenges that lie ahead as you make your way NOBO.
From Gooch Gap to Woody Gap you get your first real overlook view from Ramrock Mountain. From this area, the views will continue to appear along the Appalachian Trail. However, if you hike this section in the warmer months, you will be in the green tunnel, so enjoy the views as they are limited.
Going from Neel Gap to Woody Gap is a better way to experience this section of the Appalachian Trail. It is easier to approach Blood Mountain and you will have a less strenuous hike if you hike this section SOBO.
Hiking from Tesnatee Gap to Neel Gap is one of the best section hikes on the Appalachian Trail in Georgia. Going SOBO from Tesnatee you will hit Cowrock Mountain which provides a stellar view and is not to be missed. There are several incredible places to explore in this area and is definitely recommended.
From Hogpen to Unicoi gap on the Appalachian Trail, you will not see many people as it is not very popular. There are limited views and less foot traffic. Since there are less hikers on trail in this section, you may encounter a bear as we did during this section hike.
Unicoi Gap To Tray Mountain on the Appalachian Trail is an extremely challenging section and is not for the faint of heart. However, you will get some incredible views from Rocky Mountain and the top of Tray Mountain. This is a great section to hike on the Appalachian Trail and is not to be missed.
Tray Mountain to Dick's Creek Gap is very challenging and will take some effort to complete. Getting into this section of Georgia on the Appalachian Trail will test you but you are getting one step closer to completing the Georgia Section of the AT.
Bly Gap To Dick's Creek gap is the best way to complete the Georgia Section Hike of the Appalachian Trail.
